Research In Motion, the technology crew behind the iconic BlackBerry device, is a great Canadian success story. Founded in 1984 by Mike Lazaridis and headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Lazaridis would go on to serve as CEO of RIM alongside pal, and fellow techie, Jim Bastille.

Before RIM dished up the iconic BlackBerry handset, a device which would go on to garner the same slavish loyalty from its fans as Apple achieved with the iPhone, the Canadian outfit worked closely with Ericsson and RAM Mobile Data on a number of projects involving two-way paging and wireless email networks. Presumably mapping out the infrastructure for would eventually become BlackBerry Messenger, the shining beacon atop RIM’s mountain of achievements.

It is widely believed within mobile technology circles that one of Lazaridis' school teachers told him the real technology breakthrough would be in mobile texting. So, after college, Lazaridis sprang from one venture to another, assembling a crack-team of techies and engineers along the way and eventually bashed out a crude method for two-way paging (further rumours abound that Lazaridis, a self-professed Trekkie, drew inspiration for the BlackBerry device from the legendary lapel communicator) thus when operators brought in Internet mail, RIM was there, ready and waiting to take advantage of this emergent technology. RIM made huge bounds in this time and for a short period of time; they had the market to themselves.

In 2001 America’s anthrax scare really pushed the BlackBerry into the limelight as it was now being viewed as a necessary security device. The US government has nearly a million BlackBerrys in operation, making it far and away, RIM's biggest customer.

Of course these days, you can’t be labelled a tech mega-brand unless you’ve been through a grizzly courtroom legal battle with a market rival over those all-important patents. RIM can show off this badge of honour after they were forced to empty their piggy bank of millions of dollars in order to appease NTP, an American patent-holding company.

Fresh in the memory for many, however, is BlackBerry’s recent network foul up when, on October 10, 2011, RIM experienced one of the worst service blackouts in the company's history. Tens of millions of BlackBerry users throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America found their Blackberry’s were on the blink; unable to send or receive emails and messages, the problem was smoothed out soon enough, but the company’s reputation took a few dizzying blows.
