Apple iPhone users are increasingly choosing to watch YouTube clips on their handsets, Google has revealed.

According to the owner of the video sharing site, the number of playbacks on mobile devices went up by 160 per cent in 2009.

This, it said, means that about 100 million clips are played by mobile users every day.

Google was speaking after it launched a revamped version of YouTube for people with smartphones such as the Apple iPhone.

The site, which makes use of the handset's touchscreen capabilities, can also be used by people with phones that have a Google Android operating system.

Consumers can make use of a range of improved functions, such as refined links with social media outlets including Twitter and Facebook.

"As the world continues to go mobile, YouTube thinks this new site will offer a great improvement for anyone who wants a more consistent YouTube experience across devices," Google stated.

This comes after Ofcom revealed that consumers spend nearly half of their waking hours using media such as smartphones and televisions.
