Acer, the Taiwan-based computer giant, introduced the DX900 on 22nd April 2009 in the Asia Pacific region. The DX900 has a dual SIM card facility along with 3.0-megapixel camera. Similar launches are also planned in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Australia and China.
At a business event held February 2009 in Barcelona, Acer declared its move into the mobile phone market with smart phones introduced by the company that are fitted with powerful processing and memory capabilities.
Roger Yuen, Vice President of Acer's smart hand-held device business group for Asia Pacific said that expansion into this market is a very big opportunity for the company and aims to be among the top five global companies for smart phones in 3 years time.
On the launch, the DX650 model was also demonstrated, it has a touch screen panel on one side and a keypad on the other. The organisation plans to bring out five models in the first half of 2009 that will likely range between £250 and £450 in price. In the latter half of the year 3 more models will be released, all with multi-media facilities but at cheaper prices for the mass market.
Speaking after the launch, Yuen added that Acer is aiming to introduce smart phones that are more cost-effective, helping to convert mobile phone users into smart phone users.
Growth in demand for smart phones - devices boasting powerful processors, abundant memories, large screens and open operating systems - has outpaced the rest of the mobile phone market for several years.
