Recent research surveys point to bad news for mobile phone companies as the recession has an effect on usage habits.
New research from Booz & Co. says that 25% of subscribers have reduced their spend on telephony and other media and a further 26% claim to be going to do the same in the next 6 months. This is not good news for mobile phone operators.
Furthermore, 45% of subscribers claimed they were looking for telecoms and media services packages in order to find an overall lower price. As one way of reducing costs 44% said they’ll look at using free VoIP services like Skype, even if quality is slightly reduced. This may well see people moving back to landlines, which is good news for BT.
And 23% reckon that finances are so stretched that they’re considering cancelling their broadband and cable TV subscriptions.
As for mobile operators, the research shows that 25% of the sample are likely to stop using their mobile phones altogether until the economy shows signs of improving, 45% say they’ll delay purchasing a new handset and 43% are looking to switch to cheaper mobile phone contracts.
These numbers should worry mobile phone operators as the facts suggest that once consumers start to move around, their brand loyalty declines and they tend to keep looking around and moving.
