Ericsson IPX has developed mobile phone technology that can geographically locate people and ascertain whether a credit card transaction is fraudulent. The user can be found in about 2 seconds.
The development resulted from members within the IPX team having been victims themselves and finding their credit cards blocked. One such person was Donya Ekstrand, the Head of Marketing for IPX, who says her credit card company called her to say that her card had been used in Tokyo while she was in fact in Stockholm.
What’s been developed is a global solution that can reach about 96 per cent of the world's mobile phones. It is still however at an early stage of development.
In the main, mobile phone users also have a credit cards too, so it’s easy to match them to a bank and where the subscriber is.
As the technology develops it will also be possible to send a text message to the user warning him of a potential breach of his credit card.
