The free music streaming provider, Spotify is about to launch a mobile service in the UK this summer. This will give users the ability to sync their mobile phone to their Spotify account allowing them to listen to music on the move.
Daniel Ek, Chief Executive of Spotify said that they were negotiating with mobile networks and handset manufacturers to offer the service as part of a package. This could however take some time to finalise.
Spotify are believed to be interested in providing mobile functionality in the future as their users are requesting music on this platform, especially given the success of the iPhone.
However, there’s work to be done ensuring the service is as simple and easy to use via mobile phones as it is on the PC.
Spotify, which employes 15 people in the UK, has stated that user-friendly music streaming is the core of their business and has denied that it’s planning to take on iTunes by offering music downloads for a fixed price per month.
Spotify’s currently has over one million users across the UK and Europe, the majority of whom have signed up for the free music service in return for receiving radio-style ads. The company would however like to recruit more users for its paid-for service by offering unlimited downloads, better functionality and unique content.
