Many US States and European countries have banned (or are about to ban) the use of mobile phones when driving. Using mobile phones in the UK when driving came into force at the end of 2003. Research now indicates that even hands free phones can affect a driver’s concentration.
As a result it is believed that the UK ban could soon be extended to include a ban on using hands free phones whilst driving too. Government research has discovered that any mobile phone use, including hands free, causes drivers to lose concentration, and that this can last for a period of time after the call has finished.
Mobile phone use is being likened to having a conversation with someone else in the car This is said not to affect driving ability, whilst mobile phone activity it is suggested affects concentration, attention and reaction times.
It is not clear why this should be so different as any activity whilst driving could cause accidents but it seems mobile phones are being singled out a sbeing the worst offenders. The view is that the activity is more intense as the brain uses its ability to create an image of a person who is not actually with you, so the action is more distracting.
