Location, Location, Location
(31/08/2010 11:27:44)

With the global positioning systems (GPS) becoming an integral part of mobile phones, whereby a user’s location can be identified, there is new trend starting in mobiles.

This is due to the growth in smart-phones, especially the iPhone, as well as the growth of wireless networks and the development in mobile software.

Thes location based software devices represent true innovation and as the Executive Vice President of Nokia, Anssi Vanjoki says, "It will change the way we live, integrating with our everyday lives." It will bring our ‘real’ lives and our computer-based ‘virtual’ lives together.

The app "Where" for example provides location-based searches and can help you locate the nearest movie theatre or an itinerary of things to do based on “where” you are. It includes a feature called "HeyWhat'sThat," – this tells you the names of the things around you from Parks to mountains and even the stars you can see in the sky with a SkyMap.

The iPhone brings all this to life through its operating system and an inbuilt GPS chip. The iPhone also pinpoints your position via mobile phone masts or Wi-Fi stations.

The BlackBerry has the Telenav application, which provides turn-by-turn directions, which is soon to be available on other mobiles too. This allows users to search for the restaurants and petrol stations closest to them

What’s more if you install Loopt you can invite friends to join your network, which means you can share your location with friends, and in theory it will also pinpoint their locations too.

Of course there are numerous barriers and dangers to all this, so we’ll just have to see how far it goes.
