Microsoft’s operating system for mobile phones needs to catch up with what’s happening in the marketplace, having developed a fair bit in the last 2 years. It maybe that the new Windows Mobile 6.5, due to be launched later in the year, can help them do this.
It comes with a bee-hive user interface that provides more space for icons which will certainly enhance usability of a touch-screen phone. The new operating system is likely to be premiered by HTC and phones with the new operating system will have Windows Marketplace already installed. This means independent software companies and developers will be able to sell their applications for use on the system.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, rival Symbian is present on the large majority of phones across the world as they work with Nokia, and Google’s Android platform is also starting to reach consumers. Microsoft needs to develop on a similar scale to compete.
Some of Microsoft’s focus is in helping to develop applications that are differentiating in healthcare and education but they’re not there yet.
