Microsoft, the world’s biggest software firm, is venturing into the mobile phone market. Industry giants such as Nokia, Samsung and LG Electronics are highly worried about this latest development as most companies are of the opinion that software is more important than hardware in today’s smart phone market.
Microsoft is reported to be holding talks with Verizon Wireless, the biggest mobile carrier of USA, to launch a smart phone early in 2010. Both the companies, when questioned by the media, refused to comment but industry sources believe Microsoft is set to give tough competition to its rivals and thus, the international mobile phone market could become a battlefield.
Traditional mobile phone companies, such as Nokia, Samsung and LG are set to face new competition from software companies such as Apple and Microsoft.
However, an employee of LG Electronics opines "Microsoft cannot compete with leading mobile phone companies as it needs to concentrate more on its Windows Mobile operating system, rather than becoming a leading smart phone manufacturer."
