The launch of multicore GPU products will be targeted directly at handheld, automotive and mobile markets as photo realistic graphics, immersive gaming and HD video takes a huge step forward. The new designs, which are highly sophisticated, have been developed by Imagination Technology’s fabled chip designer, who is well known for his work on the PowerVR MBX core powered Apple iPhone.
The new line, PowerVR SGX543MP, is a GPU product based on the technology behind the company`s PowerVR SGX543 graphics core.
Tony King-Smith, Imagination's VP of Marketing, said at the Multicore Expo in Santa Clara, California that the SGX543MP family would hold up from 2 to 16 cores with all core applications being provided by the software driver.
With no involvement by the application and more importantly, with no interference by the applications developer, data will be passed by the driver to an MP code scheduler, which passes the same data to a pipeline scheduler per core, passing data to a multi-threaded processing engine, which then manages the threads as the graphics data is processed.
King-Smith in his keynote, made mention of PowerVRSGX543, and cited examples of graphic applications saying that the SGX543MP designs will provide seamless functionality to HD video, as promised.
