Nokia has launched a global campaign to recycle old mobile phones in a campaign called “TakeBack”. As part of this project the company successfully tested controlling e-waste in four Indian cities earlier in the year. As a result the campaign is to be rolled out nationally across India during the year. Consumers with old phones will be asked to place their unwanted handsets into one of the bins that can be found at Nokia’s care centres and priority dealers.
Nokia is also going to plant a young tree for each mobile phone it receives and it’s estimated that some 12,500 fruit trees and other young trees will be planted in four villages in Kancheepuram. The campaign will both educate users on the issues surrounding e-waste as well as giving something back to the environment.
Nokia decided to roll-out the campaign after the test phase resulted is some 3 tonnes of e-waste being recycled from about 10,000 phones, 12,000 batteries and 20,000 chargers that were handed in from concerned people. For the tree planting initiative, Nokia has partnered with Ahimsa, the Non-governmental Organisation in the State and Rotary Mid Town in Bangalore.
The roll-out will see about 5,000 collection points i.e. around 1,300 bins across India.
