In order to stop box breakers Nokia has created a strong anti box-breaking lock to its handsets, which will lock both the language and network of the phone.
The product is called ‘Sim-lock2 and updates existing locks. In tests it significantly reduced box breaking. It’s being said that both Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets, previously the main targets for breakers, are now the toughest to unlock due to updated software.
It will be used on all upcoming releases as well as Nokia’s mid-range and entry-level phones such as the 6500, 6300 and 2310. The company’s low priced prepay handsets have mainly been targeted as they’re the easiest to sell on
The network and language locks will only allow mobile phones to work on the network they’re sold on. There are some fears that perpetrators will go to retailers where some mobile phones are taken in Sim-free and subsequently ‘Sim-matched’ with networks.
Nokia said it will “continue to take a tough approach to the issue”.
