mobile phone recycling has been taking place for a while now and you can sell your old mobile for cash at places like Fonebank, or indeed donate that money to a number of different charities. Following this concept an appeal has been set up by the Watson-Watt Society of Brechin to donate old mobile phones to fund a permanent memorial to the 'father of radar', Sir Robert Watson-Watt.
An appeal for locals to donate their old mobile phones has been established and the society, a registered Scottish charity, has been working for some years publicising the work of Robert Watson-Watt and his team. Robert Watson-Watt and his team were responsible for developing the radar defence system that had a massive impact on preventing the Germans from invading the UK during World War II.
A design for the memorial is underway and the society hopes that people will donate their old mobile phones as their contribution to this local attraction. The initial target is only 100 phones, although they’d obviously like more, with proceeds going directly into the memorial fund.
One local business has offered to be a collection point for their workers and it’s hoped other local shops will follow suit.
