Both the mobile phone companies and portals are looking to promote accessing the Internet via smart phones, although the true mobile Internet explosion has not yet really taken off.
One main reason is that smart phone users are resisting signing up what are pretty expensive mobile Internet services. Carriers are investing heavily in converting desktop applications for mobile handset hoping to get ahead of the competition and steal the market
In Korea, a country that makes some of the top smartphone models, NHN, the operator of Naver, the country's most popular website has launched a new web portal for smart phones, PDAs and other mobile Internet devices.
NHN is a bit of a late entrant to the mobile market but certainly has the financial resource to be included.
It seems that Internet companies are hurriedly launching mobile portals although there is little difference between them. Daum, the No. 2 web portal in Korea, released Daum Mobile in January and there’s also SK Communications, which operates Nate and Cyworld, the social networking service, who launched Mini Cyworld for wireless users last December.
Traffic to these portals is small due to the expensive data services, but with wireless operators introducing fixed-rates, and the popularity of smart-phones increasing, the mobile Internet could soon be about to take off.
