UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced a reduction in mobile termination rates, the charges levied by mobile phone operators that allow calls on their network by other operators, which is included in the call charge. BT in this respect has been ordered by Ofcom to make cuts in the termination rates for mobile operators whose customers use 0845 and 0870 numbers on mobile phones, thus resulting in a cheaper cost of calling to mobiles.
BT normally charges mobile phone customers for calling 0845 and 0870 numbers by mobile operators when the amount goes above 12.49 pence per minute (ppm) based on a sliding scale. The rate cut by BT for 0845 numbers is 2ppm for charges between 12.5 and 17.49ppm, increasing as the charges by mobile operator increase and it applies a similar scale of charges to 0870 numbers.
Ofcom said in its provisional judgement, "Our conclusion is that it is not fair and reasonable for BT to apply new termination charges for calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers hosted on its network."
