In a recent research study on the latest trends in mobile handset design, Microsoft Windows Mobile OS is found having the highest adoption rate among all newly launched mobile phones. Other trends include an increase in 3.5G models, GPS, the candy bar style and chip-sets. Analyst Celia Bo said in the research conducted by ABI, “In recent years the major technology and application trends in handset design have focused on 3G (and beyond) capabilities, including web surfing, social networking, multimedia, connectivity, better cameras, VOIP, pico projectors and more.”
The ABI report suggests that in handset design, five trends are currently ruling the mobile market. One such trend is moving to 3.5G handsets, which accounted for 56% of all handsets in 2009 with the next important trend being the rise in use of GPS technology. The report further reveals the preference for candy bar style phones that accounted for 51% of new models in 2009, beating sliders and clamshell.
Another popular trend is handset chip-sets on which the report says, “While Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, [Texas Instruments’] OMAP, Intel Atom and NVIDIA’s Tegra are driving the markets for 3G and 3G.5 technology, the development of 4th Generation LTE and WiMAX chipsets is primarily led by Altair Semiconductor, Wavesat and Comsys Mobile, among others.”
But the ultimate trend was the Microsoft Windows Mobile winning the highest adoption rate, although some experts suggest that Google’s Android has been the fastest-growing mobile OS among them all.
