mobile phone theft is rising in the UK and users are having to guard their handsets more stringently. With the huge attraction of high-end smartphones, mobile phones are the most common item stolen as thieves can earn good amounts of money from them.
In Sheffield, for example, more than one in ten residents have been victims of mobile phone theft, according to a survey from life assistance company CPP. In Edinburgh, one in nine people have had their phones stolen whilst in London, the figure is one in eight. The survey also reveals the methods mobile phone thieves resort to in order to steal handsets. One in ten mobile phone users are mugged, 25 per cent are pick-pocketed and 20 per cent have their handset stolen from a restaurant or pub table. Mobile phone users even have to be careful at work as one in twenty fall victim to their colleagues.
Danny Harrison of the CPP said, “With Home Office figures suggesting that a staggering 228 mobiles are stolen every hour in the UK, mobile users need to remember that phone thieves will stop at nothing to get their hands on the latest handsets.” He further added, "Let all mobile phone users keep careful watch over their handsets and continue to be extra vigilant to avoid unnecessary loss."
A significant number of mobile phone users admitted that the loss of their handset was due to their own carelessness with most losing their phone on more than one occasion.
