Police on the Isle of Man have started a road safety campaign urging motorists to be aware of the dangers created by using mobile phones behind the wheel. The weeklong 'Kill your call - not someone else' campaign is more hard-hitting than previous campaigns in recent years as police aim to emphasise that using mobiles while driving puts people at 'a significantly higher risk' of having an accident.
A poster with the campaign slogan will be placed on the island. Policeman from the Road Policing Unit will also be out on the island's roads, checking drivers in their latest attempt to stop people using their mobile phones while driving.
Inspector Mark Britton, of Manx Police said, "It has been shown that motorists using a mobile phone while driving are 50% more likely to have an accident than when they're not using a mobile phone.” Being aware of the road ahead, rather than concentrating on a phone call, is clearly very important in regard to road safety.
He went on to say, "If drivers have to use their mobiles while driving they should use hands free systems and we are working with Manx Telecom to highlight that hands free kits are readily available for those drivers who need them."
