From humble beginnings on the banks of the Nokianvirta River in south-western Finland, Nokia have evolved from a small wood pulp mill to global telecommunications leader, connecting over a billion people worldwide.
Nokia’s journey from rural Finland to global mega-brand has seen their manufacturing portfolio go from paper pulp and rubber boots to cutting edge consumer electronics via a strangled route of forestry, cables and power production.
It wasn’t until the dawn of the 1980’s, that Nokia’s current guise as a major telecommunications vendor took shape as they began selling a mobile phone called the Mobira Cityman – a beast of a device weighing in at nearly a kilogram. This was made possible by the invention and installation of the first international cellular network service, Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), which sees Nokia ideally placed to take advantage of this pioneering new technology allowing international cellular roaming. The world would never be the same again as the mobile phone era is born.
By 1998, Nokia have cemented their place as the world leader in mobile phones, as the first mobile phone craze sweeps the globe. The Snake phenomenon which began on the cusp of the new millennium had millions frittering away hours and hours trying to guide their pixelated serpent to a high-score.
Nokia’s commitment to innovation saw them dabble with smartphone technology as early as 1999, when they launched the 7110, a phone capable of simple web-based functions such as e-mail. Following that up in 2001 was Nokia’s first phone with an in-built camera, the 7650 and, in late 2002, Nokia showed off the first handset capable of video capture, the 3650.
In 2005, Nokia’s dominance in the mobile phone market, particularly within developing nations, becomes apparent, as they shift their billionth mobile phone – the cheap and cheerful 1100 – in Nigeria.
In a move befitting Nokia’s flexible and adaptive past, 2011saw the Finnish mobile giants join forces with computer gurus Microsoft in the hope of establishing a third mobile operating ecosystem to keep pace with Android and iOS.
