2001 was the year in which tech giants Sony and Swedish telecommunication giants, Ericsson, first joined forces intent on global domination. The iconic swirls of the Sony Ericsson logo was debuted on the funky little T610i, and from this successful platform, Sony Ericsson started selling mobiles at an impressive rate, producing some of the classiest and technologically-proficient devices in the mobile phone market.
As one would imagine, Sony were one of the trailblazers in the mobile music movement as, in 2005, the w800 was released. Dubbed the ‘Walkman’ phone, this handset gave all slavering audiophiles a chance to show off their record collection in a compact and stylish mobile phone.
Next up, photography. Selling a mobile phone complete with a nifty camera is pretty standard these days, but there was a time not so long back, 2006 to be precise, when mobile phone cameras were at best functional and at worst, laughable. Then along came the Sony Ericsson K800 Cyber-shot and the bar was forever raised.
Sony Ericsson put all their faith in Google’s little green robot and produced their first Android-driven smartphone, the Xperia X10, in 2010, this in turn was quickly followed up by the smartphone genres first real foray into serious gaming, as Sony poured in their gaming know-how to produce the Xperia Play device.
In 2012, Sony broke off the romance with Ericsson and decided to go it alone, buying out the Swedes in a multi-million dollar deal. The mobile handset business becomes a wholly-owned branch of Sony.
The Xperia S device is the first Sony-branded handset to be produced, hitting the shelves in 2012.
